As farmers, we are acutely aware of the resources required to grow food and distribute it to where it needs to go. We are also in tune with the immense amount of waste that is created throughout this process – including the roughly ⅓ of all food that is lost or wasted each year.
Those of you who have been to our farm may know that we operate a store, the Millstone Farm Market, right across the street from our farm in Sunderland where we sell our own produce and local value-added products. Recently, Millstone Market manager Cory Stafford was highlighted in the Greenfield Recorder for his incredible efforts in partnering with local resident Ben Goldberg to close the “food loop” by turning uneaten produce from the market into nutrient-rich compost.
“It’s the circle of life – veggies come from the dirt and end up back in the dirt,” explains Cory. “We don’t like throwing anything away.” The compost that is created in the process is both used on the farm and is available for purchase at the Millstone Market. “We pride ourselves on our produce, and we want those who grow their own at home to benefit, too.”
