Did you know that August 6th is Farm Worker Appreciation Day? Each year, this day recognizes those who are not always considered when we think about how our food gets from the field to our table. Whether it’s pouring rain or the sun is beating down on the most humid summer days, our field crews show up to tend to the crops and harvest what ends up in our CSA shares.
When thinking about where our food comes from, an equally important conversation is how we treat and support those who are at the forefront of growing, harvesting, and packing it. “Knowing your farmer” includes, but is not limited to, the farm owner; there are many faces to each farm that go unrecognized and whose stories are not often told.
In addition to supporting our CSA program, consider contributing to a local community or non-profit that is engaged in advocating for farm workers’ rights, acquiring arable land and resources for BIPOC, refugee, and immigrant populations, and other critical actions. Here is a non-exhaustive list of groups doing this work both locally and regionally:
All Farmers – Springfield, MA
Nuestras Raíces – Holyoke, MA
Beginning Farmers Network – statewide
Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust – regional
Soul Fire Farm – regional
