As our CSA season comes to a close and the winter months approach, we often find ourselves in a place to reflect on the highs and lows of this year's season (as well as taking time to rest and re-energize ourselves for next year). With this reflection comes expanding our focus to the people, communities, and systems beyond our small farm, all while remembering our place within these frameworks.
This winter and spring, I encourage you to continue finding ways to support our local food systems through farmers' markets, food delivery businesses, co-ops, and other means of connecting with your farmers. Just to name a handful, we love Mass Food Delivery, Cape Ann Fresh Catch, Farm Direct Co-op, and the metro Boston farmers' markets that run all winter long.
In addition to buying locally, there are other ways that I like to stay engaged with food systems, agriculture, and sustainability. Here is a list of books and podcasts I love that center around these topics:
- Gravy – Southern Foodways Alliance (podcast)
- Scene On Radio: Season 5 – “The Repair” (podcast mini-series)
- NPR's Throughline – “Octavia Butler: Visionary Fiction” (podcast episode)
- “Farming While Black” – Leah Penniman (book)
- “The Farm Bill: A Citizen’s Guide” – Christina Badaracco & Dan Imhoff (book)
Let us know how you plan to continue supporting local food and movements working toward creating a more just, equitable, and sustainable future both within and beyond our food systems. We'd love to hear from you, and we’re happy to answer any questions you may have along the way.
