Farm Happenings for July 24, 2020

Posted on July 22nd, 2020 by Christina Houston

Happy Wednesday! I hope everyone has been able to stay cool and hydrated throughout our heatwave. We are steady harvesting. We hope to see okra soon on the CSA list so keep eyes on that. We also have blackberries getting ready to turn black. Our raspberries and strawberries have been struggling to keep up but they are still producing. We have lots of cucumbers, zucchini, and cabbage. Some of our members opted to have their box filled at our market at Penn Street on Thursdays from 10-2. If this is something you are interested in, please email me at chouston@bma.us to discuss further details. We also have our Tuesday market running at the Penn State St. Jo hospital on the corner of Reed and Walnut St from 11-2. We do advise our customers to arrive right when we open to have first choice at our stand.

On the farm, the crew has been putting lots of effort into the hay and keeping down the weeds. We have lots of things to be harvested, as well. If you would like to volunteer on the farm or know someone who would, we will happily take the help. Volunteers will also be able to take home produce at the end of their volunteer time each day they volunteer. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn how to harvest, plant, and process their produce as well. We also offer a U-pick option if you or someone you know would like to come pick their own produce, we have special sales that vary per item of interest.

These various programs, varieties of plants, and markets are all apart of how the CSA program helps to support our farm and help it to grow. Thank you for your support!

On a side note, there have been some accidents and technical issues that have happened through the harvie website. The best I can say is Harvie is undergoing a lot of maintenance to expand their system in order to better serve the 100k+ customers on their website. This site started by a small group and has expanded faster than they expected, which is a good thing. I want to thank you for your patience as Harvie clears bugs and errors that come with updating the site while keeping the site live. That is a difficult task. I am here to help with any difficulties you may have and ask for understanding that this is out of my control and I will do what I can to accommodate you. Again, please email me directly and not through the Harvie website.

Thank you and have a beautiful week! Stay Healthy, safe, and blessed!
