It's September. Things are getting pretty real. The days are growing shorter, the vine crops are leaning out, and the nights are waning cool..this is a recipe for change.
Out in the field we are doing a final round up in the melon patch while gearing up to begin harvesting the first of the season's corn and fall cabbages. Our delicata squash are curing and will be filling your boxes soon! Tomatoes are still ripening, but their time will soon come to an end. The message is clear: enjoy the fruits of the season while they're still here! To extend the taste of summer for a bit longer, we put in a late season succession of zucchini and the plants are sizing up nicely and baby fruits are taking shape. As long as there are still warm days ahead we will be able to keep some of the summer crops coming your way for a time.
But as fall settles cooling into the air around us, it will soon be time to harvest pumpkins, winter squash, celeriac and radishes, and food prep will shift to include more soups and roasted vegetables. For the moment we find ourselves in-between summer and fall, with a shoe in both seasons. The best thing to do at a time like this, is eat!
