Perhaps one of the more underrepresented members of the farm family, Bella the Dog is by far the most loyal when it comes to spending time with the crops. As it turns out, this omnivore-like dog really enjoys a good ear of corn. During the month of September when the corn was at it's peak, she was spotted by several members of the crew nosing her way around the rows, trying to sniff out a discarded ear or two. It's safe to say that it was a good season for the corn, and another good season for this vegetable-loving farm dog.
As the weeks move into October, late-season crops are filling our harvest bins. In the greens department, mustards, salad mix and arugula are thriving with the cooler weather. Salad turnips and radishes are moving in on the scene, and celeriac is making a spectacular debut!
Side note: If you haven't cooked with celeriac yet, I encourage you to give one a try. They may look unusual, but when it comes to flavor, they always deliver. Celeriac is one of my top choices for using in soups, stews and with roasted meats. This season's crop is ginormous and loaded with potential!
Speaking of coveted soup season veggies, our celery is getting close too...if you love the full flavor of fresh celery, then you are in for a treat! Several recent taste tests have revealed that sweet, juicy crunch that we so hope for. Coming soon to your CSA share!!
As always, enjoy the great gift of locally and lovingly grown food:-)
Your Farmer,
Danielle
