As a parent, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing my kids engage with food from the farm. Both Henry and Shep like cooking, and and this is leading to an increasing amount of experimentation in the kitchen. These days, Henry is on a canning kick. He truly loves snacking on hot dilly beans and cucumber pickles, so early in on the summer he decided to up his game and do some of the canning himself. Thanks to a healthy supply of veggies and a reliable book of recipes (Joy of Pickling ), we have a growing stash of pickles in the pantry for the months ahead.
Whether or not you have kids around your kitchen, there's no time like the present to put some food up. Fermented, canned or otherwise, there are lots of interesting ways to preserve the harvest. This week we'll be offering a couple of extra items in bulk quantities for the purposes of food preservation, like pickling cukes and Roma tomatoes, so feel free to add some to your share while quantities last. There's something truly satisfying about looking at a line of jars in the pantry after you've done the work of converting raw vegetables to shelf stable goods. Just ask Henry!
