What’s in the Box?
The bok choi is looking perfect this week and as promised, the arugula is amazing. The first of the dill and butterhead lettuce are ready for harvest and there is lots of salad mix and spinach.
We'll also be harvesting our first kohlrabi. I love to peel it, cut it into coins and use it to dip up hummus. My gluten-free friend says kohlrabi leaves make the best wraps.
On the Farm
We got caught by surprise by a fairly major freeze event this week.
I had checked the weather network (obsessively as usual) and it predicted 0 degrees, which is no big deal- anything that can’t take 0 is in a covered structure. As it turned out the temperature was MUCH colder and there was a very hard frost that liquefied our asparagus and did some serious damage to our early beets and peas. It’s a very hard blow and we don’t know for sure if some of these things will recover. There’s a lot of “if only,” and “I wish” being uttered over here but the truth is that this is farming. Sometimes the weather or the bugs or whatever, throws you for a total loop because you are working with natural systems and you only have so much control.
All that being said: the lettuce is gorgeous, the rhubarb is perfect, the asparagus will come back and there will be abundant, beautiful, healthy food coming out of this beautiful farm for months to come.
Thanks for being there for us on this wild food growing journey.
That's it for now, happy eating until next time.
