ON THE FARM
It has slowly been getting colder these mornings but when the sun is out, the view makes it a little more worth it to pull ourselves from our cozy beds and head to the field.
The past week was filled with regular harvests, a lot of bulk harvest and lots of cabbage sorting. We pulled and topped purple top turnips mostly for Brian's pigs (but especially for our affectionately nicknamed Pigianna). We harvested lots of rainbow carrots this week and though a little small they are a visual delight (and tasty too!). This variety is aptly named Glow Sticks!
Harvesting greens has been a nice treat with many a sweet spinach leaf munched on and a lot of love towards our vibrant arugula (seen with Farmer Amy).
The coming weeks will see the completion of our bulk crop harvest, lots of bulk washing and farm clean up then we are able to slow down a bit to adjust to the changing of the season.
What's in the Box?
This week we have some new veggies on offer including daikon radish! Tamara learned that row cover was not helping with aphid issues with this particular crop and opted to grow them without cover and the result is a bountiful crop of these purple beauties. Daikon radish is a delight in kimchi or lightly pickled alongside carrots in banh mi.
We also have a new variety of squash called Autumn Frost! Don't be put off my it's frosty exterior as it can be enjoyed similarly to your other favorite winter squash just with a spooky spin.
We are selling some of the last of our pie pumpkins so if you want to roast and freeze or can your own puree, now is the time! Maybe enjoy that puree in a sweet treat like this pumpkin cake.
Until next time!
