ON THE FARM
This past week's weather has been spectacular albeit very strange. Summer in October?! It has been a pleasure working outside and we got a lot done with this renewed energy from the sun!
We managed to say goodbye to delicious sweet peppers and make room for more deliciousness and started to make a dent in our winter carrot harvest. Everytime these orange beauties are hit with frost they get a little sweeter but we like to have them topped and stored before the crew gets too frosted and revolts! We unfortunately do not get sweeter in that weather but we do get sillier so maybe that is a win win.
Speaking of silly and the crew, we celebrated fall with a little party complete with pumpkin cake, pumpkin cookies, a pumpkin bowling contest and a golden pumpkin ceremony. What is a golden pumpkin ceremony? Well, we nominate each other for different awards like best singing voice or buncher of veggies. On the sillier side of things it is sassiest or tallest queen. It was a lot of fun!
What's in the Box?
We will have the first of Red Pine Corner's green cabbages and small amount of Savoy from us! Cabbage is slept on in my opinion. It makes a great slaw obviously but is delicious in an undone cabbage roll casserole, roasted like this or in a simple soup. This soup in particular is a favourite of mine. And of course there is always sauerkraut.
Rainbow carrots are back along with our standby orange carrots this week! I don't think I need to suggest how to enjoy those. We enjoy them out in the field while topping and get a bonus probiotic from the dirt we inevitably consume while doing so.
Lastly, do not sleep on spinach. It is so so so sweet this time of year and I find has much more substance (i.e. a whole bag does not turn into 2 tablespoons when cooked). Just nibble a stem and see what I mean. Enjoy it in a fall inspired salad with our roasted squash or in a chana saag (curried chickpeas).
That's all for now! Happy eating until next time!
