Thanks so much and please read on to hear what's happening on the farm, and what new veggies are coming available.
ON THE FARM
We did it! We were able to finish ALL BULK HARVEST! That means carrots, rutabaga, celeriac, Jerusalem artichokes, turnips and beets (and mangelwurzel) are all in storage for your winter enjoyment. Some crops like mangelwurzel which are essentially giant beets developed to feed livestock are for Brian's beloved pack of pigs. Here is farmer Julien with his cream of the crop!
We were fortunate (somewhat concerningly) to have some really nice days for bulk harvest and didn't have too slog too much through the muck and rain. By the end of the season the farmers are pretty strong but 8 hours of roots will tire anyone and the cold certainly gets into our bones!
What's in the Box?
This week we have some new veggies on offer including watermelon radish! A beautiful vegetable perfect for a veggie platter or julienned into a slaw. Celery makes a return as well this week but this celery is best enjoyed in cooked dishes. But most excitingly we have SWEET POTATOES! We all know how to enjoy a good sweet potato but this slow roasted sweet potato is a fantastic way to fully enjoy the flavor or try it with a punchy miso dressing and broccolini in this grain bowl.
Also, please do not sleep on the autumn frost squash! It is absolutely delicious and is accurately described as a richer tasting butternut and it is a real looker to boot!
Also also, we have lots of delicious salad turnips that only get sweeter with colder days and nights and the greens look great in the fall with all the flea beetles waiting to attack next summer season. Enjoy these little snow balls sauteed with butter, soy, and sweetener of your choice and toss the chopped greens in for the last couple minutes.
Until next time!
