ON THE FARM

Well, the weather is finally feeling somewhat November and now that the bulk crops are harvested it is wash, pack and clean up the field time! The barrel washer is something every farm needs for bulk crops as it drastically cuts down the time it would take to wash them by hand. This contraption gently rotates the crop while little sprayers get every (or almost) nook and cranny of the vegetable. A shout out to Julien for doing a great deal of root washing already this season and with such a great attitude. Here he is using the barrel washer to clean some rutabaga while being frightened by me.

With our recent luck with actual rain we were able to plant Tamara's collection of coniferous and deciduous tree and shrub friends. There is a reason she is affectionately called The Crazy Plant Lady (admittedly mostly by me).

At least the sun came out eventually!

Julien and I hustled later in the week to harvest extra salad turnips and radish before a very chill -3 degree night and they look gorgeous! Consider snagging some for your stir fry this week.

What's in the Box?

This week we have a small amount of parsnips on offer! I am quite partial to this root vegetable chopped into half moons alongside carrots and sauteed with butter and seasoned with some fresh thyme and mustard then drizzled with maple syrup/honey. I promise they are bigger than the parsnip pictured below but it was too cute to pass up the photo op and is a reminder of the effects of shade on crops!

We also have sun chokes this week. Sun chokes are also know as Jerusalem artichokes and are a tall growing plant in the Asteraceae family. They produce a beautiful yellow flower much like sunflowers (also in the Asteraceae family) but tubers. They are high in fibre and do not spike blood sugar like a potato might and they are a little nutty. Try roasting them!

Not to cast any shade on potatoes though as we have our regular potato portions this week along with a small amount of 5# bulk along with onions. Speaking of large amounts of onions try them caramelized in a stick to your ribs delight such as french onion baked lentils and farro with a tasty green salad topped with some beets and balsamic dressing. YUM.

Until next time!
