Hi everyone,
We know this is the first week for many of you, so welcome!
Still the same old story - a little warmer and now perhaps a little less rain would be good! It looks like we might just get that this week; but things are still running behind normal. We're just going to start getting into a little more variety this week and hopefully with this warmer weather and sunshine, everything will make some good progress this week! The cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes in the hoophouses are all looking good - much further along than their outdoor counterparts. Cucumbers will be ready in the next week or so and tomatoes still have a bit of time - even our hoophouse crops are running around two weeks behind. The lack of heat at night really slows things down, so we're looking into what it'd cost to add a bit of supplemental heat for the spring to help keep things moving during cool springs like this. Two weeks of sales in an already short growing season is a pretty big thing to lose, and I'd imagine most of you wouldn't mind two more weeks of tomatoes!
Our builder finally finished up on our main building this week, so now we just have to wait for the plumber to wrap up before we're finally finished with it. We still have another building that'll be getting built this summer (we haven't gotten ambitious enough to build anything too big yet!) but having the main processing building done is a huge plus. We've never been able to use wheels to move product from the processing area to the cooler and into the trailer for delivery until now - it's a pretty big deal! Fun fact, did you know it took nearly 300 years after the invention of the wheel for it to be used for transportation purposes, sometime around 3200 B.C.? I guess us taking five years to adopt them isn't such a big deal, right?
Well, it may be Sunday, but the farm doesn't know that, so we're going to wrap this up here and go get some more work done! If anyone that's just getting started this week has any questions about their first delivery, just let us know!
