Farm Happenings for June 27 & 28, 2019

Posted on June 23rd, 2019 by Brendan Prewitt

Hi everyone,

This warmer weather sure is a welcomed sight. It's been a long time coming, but everything's finally starting to take off. Cucumbers should start making it into boxes this week and it looks like peas may just be ready for next week - they're just starting to flower finally. We may even have a few cherry tomatoes starting to ripen, but they're still a few weeks from really going strong.

This week, students from the U of M Bio Station will be starting their agroecology course at the farm. This is the second year we'll be partnering with the instructor to offer this course. The students will spend the first few weeks helping out around the farm to learn more about the farm, our challenges and future plans. From there, they each select a topic to research on the farm and will spend the next few weeks conducting research and collecting data from the farm. At the end of the course, they compile all of their results and present their findings and solutions. Little do they know, we have 5,000+ garlic plants waiting for them to weed; but it'll give us some good time to get to know each other!

Every time we think we're wrapping up the work in the greenhouse it seems to have a way of filling back up. After a month of battling weeds most days, seeding in the greenhouse comes as a nice change of pace. This time of year, the greenhouse fills back up with fall season crops like broccoli and cauliflower that won't be planted until late July.

Speaking of July, we wanted to remind everyone that if you have a Thursday pickup, it'll be falling on 4th of July this year. We will still be making deliveries (the plants don't seem to be aware of the holidays - go figure!), but if you need to reschedule your pickup, contact us and we can get you all squared away.

Well, time to go back to work - if anyone has any questions, just let us know!
