ZUCCHINI DAYS
The zucchini are started to flow! A bit early, eh? We start our plants in the hoophouse. We are harvesting almost daily to keep up. Enjoy them sauteed or grilled or raw!
Enjoy this recipe from The Moosewood Cookbook for zucchini-crusted pizza: http://blog.houseinthewoods.com/2011/06/27/zucchini-crusted-pizza/ (link in plain text below) It is so good, more like a crispy flat quiche, we don’t even put toppings on it. I haven’t made it without cheese, but I might try.
WHAT'S GROWING ON
We grow a light green Lebanese zucchini that holds its size better than the dark green and tastes the same. Try the kohlrabi (peeled) and the turnips raw first, but they can be lightly sauteed or grilled as well. Chop those garlic scapes and sautee in everything! or blend in dips and pesto. I’ve been cleaning and chopping all my scallions and keeping them in a jar in the frig to use all week. Greens, greens of all kinds--get your fill in these early weeks when they are most prolific and succulent.
FARM HANDS DAYS
Sometimes I'll offer up a "Farm Hands Day". These are invitations to help grow the crops that feed you. You might be planting or harvesting. You'll learn a lot along the way! Next up is sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes grow from a sprout that shoots off of a planted sweet potato and its called a slip. We'll be planting sweet potato slips during the Thurs and Fri pickups soon. Stay tuned! Good job for all ages. Join us!
