Farm Happenings for October 24, 2024

OUR HEIRLOOM VARIETIES

Have you noticed how sweet our sweet potatoes are? and butternut squash? One reason is because they are heirloom varieties, known for delicious flavor. Many of our crops are heirloom varieties, not just some of our tomatoes. We curate our varieties carefully, making choices based on flavor and successful growth in the field. Big ag grows varieties bred for display aesthetics like size and shape, or ability to run through machinery and pack well in boxes. We get to make decisions based on flavor!

WHAT'S GROWING ON

All the fall favorites are flowing now! We are harvesting a different bok choy variety this week that is smaller. See if you notice a difference in flavor. I’m not sure. U-PICK Snap pea plants were looking good but not producing many peas. We watered them more and the plants are flowering more now. Keep a watch for peas to snack on. There is a new fall flower row near the Bean Hut.

DIGGING THE SWEETS...COMPLETE!

We dug in the dirt...thank you to the Ramirez family for your help on Saturday! Sweet potato crop is up and curing. What’s involved in curing sweet potatoes? Read my blog about curing sweets on Mother Earth News online. This article was actually printed in the paper mag this fall. On newstands now.
