CUCUMBERS
Cucumbers grow their own sun umbrellas! The big leaves of cucumbers shade the cukes so they don’t get scorched by the sun. Clever design. Picking cucumbers is hard work. I have a love and hate relationship with a big cucumber patch. Like zucchini, it’s a lot of routine picking--every 2-3 days. But what a bounty and a favorite crop to eat. I like them chilled and sliced. Maybe with a little salt and lemon. Dipped in hummus. Chopped with parsley and tomatoes and sometimes quinoa.

WHAT'S GROWING ON
Did you notice your harvest bag is getting heavier? Broccoli! Chop salad turnips, carrots and peeled kohlrabi to toss into salads. Summer crops, like squash, cucumbers, dense round cabbages and soon we will add peppers and eggplant. We are harvesting garlic this week which will air-dry to cure for a few weeks before adding it to shares. Grill patty pan and zucchini by slicing into long zuke slices or big patty pan circles, marinate in olive oil and fresh (or dried) herbs, then grill. Grilled squash go great in pasta, sandwiches, salads or sides. Have you used big napa cabbage leaves as sandwich wraps yet? So good.
