Farm Happenings for August 19, 2024 - the thump, thump, thump in the night

Posted on August 17th, 2024 by Mike Milsom

I'm sorry to post late this week, but last night's antics did give me a story to share.

One day, this will be funny.

On the subject of dumb things I have done, I will tell the story among fellow farmers or at the pub and I'll pound the table and wipe my eyes as I try to catch my breathe and shake my head with a sigh and a smile.

But that day is not this day.

We literally have miles of irrigation. It runs from the well, over to the headers of each field where it is dutifully divided into a network of  underground 5/8" tape that mitigates each and every drop to the root of the plant.

Last night I wanted to work up a section for planting alongside a portion of the field that has already been planted. Everything went well enough. I decided to do one more pass just to be sure.  I  lined up my headlights to the end of the field, dropped the tiller and away I went. Looking back into the black abyss behind me all sounded good.  Stared ahead...just 200 or so more feet..  then

BANG! THUMP!! THUMP!!! THUMP!!!  What the heck?

Shut everything down..lifted the tiller....and my heart sunk.  I had caught a 2 inch main and as I had proceeded down the field I pulled everything with me ....two fields worth....as I made that last pass.  Sighs.

Ugh.

Slowly out of the field and back up to where there is light and a surface to lay on I set about the task of cutting and unwinding with dirt and debris falling into my face as I worked.  2 hours or so later 'we' were back to being all good to go.  Headed back into the field, cleared the lines that were mauled dragged all in the way.  Will fix that later.

Michael...Michael...Michael.

3am. Finished last pass and headed back up to the trailer to bed.

Oh well.... at least I got a good story out of it.. and we are getting rain for the next couple of days so there is time to fix.

On a happier note, the veggies that are in the field are doing well.  Tomatoes are green but lots and lots that are a good size. The pepper plants are heavily burdened and this week, yes, THIS week...there is eggplant -)

Enjoy!
