August has arrived and with it, crickets, and evening frogs, the buzzing of cicadas, the planting of fall crops and the harvest of some of our earliest planted spring crops - mainly garlic and onions.
New kale, kohlrabi, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower are happily in the ground. Beans, radish, and carrots have been seeded too. With the cooling evenings, we're going to try our luck again with spinach. Our lettuce and salad mix should be stepping up too in the next couple weeks, with the relentless heat abating a bit.
Our zucchini and cucumbers continue to chug along, although they're beginning to slow down. We had an early start for them this season so I'm used to them lasting longer. They've been good to us though, no denying that! Meanwhile, beans, peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes are coming up to take their place.
Winter squash are getting fat on the vines, and we have our first melon harvest! We've grown a few varieties so we should have them over the next couple weeks as they continue to ripen. This week, our yellow-skinned watermelons are ready. They're sweet, juicy, and full of seeds, like the watermelons back in the good ol' days.
