The end of August has us transitioning away from a few crops (cucumbers and zucchinis are slowing down now), and weeding, weeding, weeding, and more weeding our new plantings! Our first planting of beans seems to be finished, and our second planting is flowering and so should be yielding in a week or two. Our next planting of carrots should be ready soon, as well as our mixed greens. Kohlrabi is back! This is a great veggie to peel and eat raw, or slice it for a salad.
The most exciting arrival this week is our melons! We grew a variety called Brilliant, and it lives up to its name - so, so sweet. Melons were a bit of a test crop for us this year, so we didn't grow a huge amount (and the mice had fun eating a few as well). But we really, really want to share this lovely fruit with you. So in order for everyone to have a taste, we've decided to cube them and have them ready-to-eat in a little bag. Think of it as a taste of what's to come for future seasons, when we really up our melon game!
A little note on preferences: you can always go into your profile to tweak your preferences at any time. If you think you're getting too much of an item, you can reduce the preference rating. 5 means you will always get it if its available - but if you've rated many items as a 5, your chances of getting each of those items is the same. Sometimes, we don't have enough of a crop for everyone to have some. This is the case with our cherry tomatoes this year. We'd like to have more, and we are working on that for the future (and even for this season, hopefully). We have about 10 pints a week, which Harvie distributes amongst our members based on their preferences. To increase your chance of getting cherry tomatoes, make sure you rate it as a 5. If you have a lot of items rated as a 5, you still might not get the cherry tomatoes. Feel free to play around with your preferences. If you haven't gotten any cherry tomatoes yet, but you've rated them as a 5, please send us an email and let us know. :) Same goes if you ever have any questions or concerns about anything!
Do you like getting herbs? I'd love some feedback on this if you have any. Our basil is really happy with the compost and is getting huge now. We plant it in between our tomatoes. There is a gardening wisdom that says that they deter insects from the tomatoes and can even improve their growth and flavour.
Well, I'm off to weed carrots - see everyone soon!
