We are officially into our second half of the season! And with it, finally we got a good dosing of rain. The field was needing it, because no matter how much we irrigate, it really doesn't replace a good downpour of rain. The fall Brassicas (turnip, cabbage, winter radish, bok choy) are responding well to the moisture, as are our newly planted carrots and spinach! Zucchinis and cucumbers are still chugging along, and we gave our tomatoes a big side-dressing of compost, hoping to boost their production and keep them going through September and hopefully October. We've got lots of beans still, and our next planting of carrots and beets coming up. Succession planting (planting many crops every two to three weeks) is one key to success here on the farm. Greens and lettuce are our most frequent succession planting - we plant them in the propagation greenhouse, and transplant them into the field, every two weeks. Right now, they're the last seedlings remaining in the greenhouse - nothing else will be transplanted now, this late in the season.
This week is a week for weeding, tomato pruning, and picking beans.
We have some more preserves for sale this week from our friend Sarah at Green Door Gardens in Ilderton. Everything is homemade by Sarah, using much of our own produce. These are available to purchase as extras and will be charged to your credit card when you buy them. The pickles are $5.50 and the krauts are $7.00. Here's what's available this week:
Red Cabbage Beet Kraut, Hawaiian Kraut, Garlic Lover's Kraut, Cabbage and Kale Kraut, Honey Garlic Pickles and Dill Pickles.
Hope you all have a wonderful week - see you soon!
