Farm Share Week 18 - Thanksgiving

Posted on October 4th, 2021 by Kim Barker

Hi farm friends,

Week 18 of our Farm Share comes just before Thanksgiving Weekend. We hope you'll have the opportunity to eat and be merry with family. We have lots of quantity and variety to choose from this week, so make sure to log on and customize your shares.

We are thankful for so many things here on the farm. We are grateful for the land we have the privilege to work on. Grateful to be enveloped in nature, to get a glimpse into the complex interconnectedness of our environment - the soil, the microorganisms, the water and the plants and the animals. We are thankful to my parents, who have welcomed us here and support us in so many ways. We are thankful to our farm crew, who work magic out there in the fields from spring through fall. We are thankful to be able to raise our children here and have them alongside us as we work (productivity goes down, but laughter goes up). We are thankful to be able to grow food from the soil and feed ourselves and our community. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many different people who have found us and shared the food we have grown. The most-uttered phrase by those who visit our farm is, "That's a LOT of work." And it is. But this work gives us so much. For that, we are so thankful.

Veggies This Week

We are so excited this week for our baby carrots and parsnips. We are harvesting the carrots now as baby carrots because there are only 3 weeks left of the farm share (including this one). But they are so sweet and really perfect for roasting whole. No need to peel or cut off the edge of green, so they are so easy to pop in the oven! Great for snacking as well. This is the first year we have ever grown parsnips! And we're really happy with the results. We hope you'll enjoy them too.

We also have our (baby) leeks and (baby) fennel (sensing a trend here?), and lovely medium sized green cabbages. We made a slaw with our cabbage the other day and the flavour was incredible - so light and fresh and crispy. I didn't know I could get so excited about a cabbage, but I did. There are butternut squash available to swap into your shares (they are also small, so you'll get 2 per share).

This is a week of abundance, so why not add extra to your orders for your Thanksgiving feasts!

Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving,

Your farmer,

Kim
