Welcome to week 17 of the share! Fall is here in earnest and the root veggies and fall brassicas are here with it. Lots to choose from again this week so make sure to go and customize your shares by Tuesday midnight! Carrots, winter radish, summer radish, winter squash, turnips, kohlrabi, cabbage, and more await your meals this week.
When is my last pick up?
Our final pick up for the Farm Share is Thursday October 20th/Saturday October 22nd. So, two weeks after Thanksgiving weekend. If you are a bi-weekly member picking up this week, then your final pick up will be October 13th/15th.
Fall Shares – 1 spot left!
Wow, we are feeling very grateful for the feedback we’ve had about our Fall Shares and the speed with which people signed up. Looking forward to keeping this veggie train rolling. We have one spot remaining. If you miss out, you can still order veggies online weekly through Harvie on Tuesdays, and our Farm Store will stay open til December as well. We want to keep the share small this year as we see how our fall production goes – but if we have any extra spaces we will send out some emails.
On The Farm
Our hoophouses are planted with bok choy, salad mix, spinach, radish, and turnip. The weather got pretty cold and rainy and we have been pulling some long harvest days. We are looking forward to cleaning up our field and, hopefully having some dry weather so we can get some bed preparation ready for next fall.
Sarah was back planting for the first time since her knee injury at the end of June!
Veggies This Week
We are harvesting our squash this week. Sadly, we did not have a great year for squash and pickings are slim/the squash is small. You’ll see it in your shares this week. Moving forward, we’ll be ordering some organic winter squash from the HOPE Ecofarms Co-op. This is a co-op of Amish organic growers in the Aylmer region. This week, we have spaghetti squash from them!
Our summer crops are very much winding down, although you can still add some tomatoes, peppers, and zucchini to your shares. We are offering green peppers this week because we’re not sure if the peppers will all have time to ripen before the frost arrives.
Cucumbers are done
Three less common fall veggies we grow are kohlrabi, watermelon radish, and hakurei turnips. All are in the brassica family. Kohlrabi needs to be peeled before eating, as does watermelon radish, but all can be eaten raw. Give them a try this week!
Hakurei getting harvested. Really excited about these carrots.
Definitely get on there to customize your share to make the most of it. Dill, cilantro, basil, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, hot peppers, and more may not be automatically added to your share but are available to swap in!
Happy eating!
Your farmer,
Kim
