Greetings from the Farm: Exciting Week, Fresh Produce, and Ginger Gold Apples!

Posted on August 16th, 2024 by Lynne Schultz

Greetings CSA Members,

I hope everyone has had a great week! It's been a busy one here at the farm, with a lot of time spent on the road. On Sunday, we hauled two cows to the butcher shop, and Thursday, we took a load of chickens to the processors—so we've been racking up the miles this week. In between, we picked up our beef from the processors, so our coolers are stocked and ready to go!

And that’s not even mentioning our usual road time, delivering CSA shares, picking up fresh fruit, and delivering produce orders to restaurants and other farms. It’s a non-stop operation, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

On top of all that, we sent our kids off to school—well, sort of. If you haven’t heard, our school canceled the first day for Lilly, and our older three kids had their second day canceled due to a water main break. So, we’re gearing up to try again on Monday to get everyone back in the classroom.

As we discuss our busy travel schedule, we wanted to give you a heads-up that home delivery times might shift a bit as we adjust our routes to be more efficient, especially since our kids are back to sports and we’re losing daylight. If you pick up your CSA share on Wednesdays at the farm, the bags will be ready by noon, so you can swing by earlier if that’s more convenient.

We’ve also been getting a lot of questions about the CSA boxes. Yes, we do reuse them! All we ask is that you break them down before returning them so they take up less space and stack more easily for us.

Now, let’s talk about the exciting variety of fruit we have for you this week: apples, pears, nectarines, plums, melons, and yes, even a few strawberries! Our June-planted strawberry plants have surprised us with a small crop, so we’re thrilled to include them in this week's CSA shares.

This week, we're featuring the Ginger Gold Apple—a delightful variety that’s crisp, sweet, and perfect for both snacking and cooking.

Here are three delicious ways to enjoy Ginger Gold Apples:

  1. Ginger Gold Apple Crisp: Combine sliced Ginger Gold apples with a mixture of oats, brown sugar, and butter. Bake until golden brown and enjoy a warm, comforting dessert.

  2. Apple Slaw: Thinly slice Ginger Gold apples and toss with shredded cabbage, carrots, and a tangy vinaigrette for a refreshing, crunchy side dish.

  3. Caramel Apple Nachos: Slice Ginger Gold apples and drizzle with warm caramel sauce. Sprinkle with crushed nuts, chocolate chips, and a pinch of sea salt for a fun and tasty treat!

We hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead, and we can’t wait to see what delicious creations you come up with!

Warm Regards, The Schultz Family
