Farm Happenings for June 30, 2021

Posted on June 25th, 2021 by Peter Seely

Bernadette surveying the possibilities for this week's head lettuce and salad mix

This week's offerings:  New veggies include Swiss chard, and celery.  Cilantro as well.  Also surprising is some spinach that has weathered both the heat and dry weather.  How is it that some plantings deteriorated quickly with the onslaught of the heat, and lack of rain, while this particular one still thrived?  We probably will never know, though we continually seek answers! So many mysteries of how and why some plantings flourish, while others are not as successful.  Sometimes it is probably in the variety that is chosen, while others may be in the soil conditions that can also variety, even within the same field. As long as most of our plantings come through, though, we will be in good shape!~

Coming soon:  With the garlic scapes having been harvested off all of the garlic plants, we usually anticipate about a 3 week between scape harvest, and the beginnings of the garlic harvest.  So soon we will start picking the garlic, and be sending you some fresh garlic!  Green beans are just starting to form, so only a few more weeks before we will begin to see them.  Cherry tomatoes are just starting to turn color, so they will be coming too!  Cabbage probably another week or so away, along with some cauliflower.

Farm scene:   Weeds have always been a challenge for us, and this year is no exception!  We try a new tool this year, which we take over a field even prior to a vegetable's germination (i.e. before its emergence from the soil), and/or until the crop is 6-8 inches high, lightly scratching the entire field to catch the weeds just germinating, and before they have developed a formidable root system.  So far its results looks good on the potato field, though it wasn't as successful on the onions and carrot beds!  The recent heavy rains sure were welcome, though they did wash out some of our just seeded carrot beds. :( Extreme weather has always been a part of our experience -- indeed, our first year was 1988, which was a memorable drought year, with over 27 days over 90 degrees -- but it's still disappointing to see immediate damage to what we are trying to grow for you!  Oh well, still time to re-seed.

Deadline for swapping, etc.:  To give us an accurate pick list by Monday morning of what we to harvest for the Wednesday delivery, we will closing the window to make any changes in your order by Monday morning at 8 am.  Most weeks we would expect to send you the proposed list by Saturday night, so you would still have plenty of time to make any changes, if you would want!
