Farm Happenings for September 29, 2020

Posted on September 24th, 2020 by Shiloh Avery

I hear a lot about living in the moment. And complaints about how cell phones and their evolution into miniature computers has none of us living in the moment.  To be fair, I do think my “device” has changed my brain a little bit.  I mean, all of my lists are kept there, and my calendar, so I never have to actually remember anything.  And it’s true that I find myself thinking in social media bites (oh! I should get a picture of that for social media).  Guilty.

But as I was canning tomatoes the other day, it occurred to me that we’ve never just truly lived in the moment.  I mean, I wasn’t just sitting on the porch enjoying that moment of tomato season.  Nope, I was thinking about the future when there aren’t going to be any tomatoes.  And yesterday, when I was smoking jalapenos to preserve them into the winter months when we won’t have that flavor (or heat) again.

This time of year often churns me into a preservation frenzy.  When the evening weather is perfect for porch sitting and just enjoying the moment, I find myself rushing around putting things in jars because THIS MOMENT ISN’T GOING TO BE HERE MUCH LONGER!  I know, I know, the irony.  But maybe I’ll enjoy that winter moment when I’m eating some crazy delicious home grown organic chipotle tomato sauce from food I preserved in late September.  Maybe.

For those of you just joining us:

Welcome to the Fall harvest share!

Just a couple of logistical items for those of you just joining us (feel free to ignore if you are already in the know):

You will receive your customization email on Sundays.  I'm not consistent about what time on Thursdays (it depends on what else is going on).  Your share has been assembled virtually based on your preferences and what we predict we'll be harvesting the following week.  Here are details on how the preferences work and how to set your preferences: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021794754-How-do-preferences-work-

You have until Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. to further customize your share (swap items, add extras, etc.). Here's the details on how to swap, add extras, etc.: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001667414-How-Swaps-and-Extras-Work

I know this seems early, but it gives us a chance to put together our harvest list for Thursday in case we're short handed and need to begin harvesting on Thursday, which sometimes happens.

Then on Saturday, your share will be at your pick up location with a label with your name on it.  Please check both first and last names carefully before taking your share as each box is custom harvested and packed for each individual and if you take the wrong box--you might both be sad!  We re-use these boxes (which is why there is a liner inside containing the produce), so please return them the next week, or leave them there when you pick up your produce (i.e. just take the liner). Either way works for us--do whatever is easiest for you!

Going to be out of town?  No problem!  Here's how to put your share on hold, reschedule your share, etc.: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001542514-How-to-reschedule-change-a-delivery-location-and-hold-a-share-  If you wish to turn a held share into credits, I have to do that manually, so just let me know and I'll make that happen.

Speaking of credits, you might turn a vacation into a credit, or (insert shocked gasp here) we might make a mistake in packing and you don't get something you were supposed to get.  I will enter your credits in any of these events as soon as I know and here's how to access and use credits: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034785114-Credits-What-they-are-how-to-receive-them-and-how-to-redeem-them-

Here's Harvie's general help section for anything I might have missed, but also feel free to contact me or Harvie if you have a question/problem: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/115000048773-Harvie-University-Members
