This week begins the annual transition as we start saying goodbye to the Spring Crops and hello to the summer crops. This most likely will be the last week for Sugar Snap Peas but the green beans are starting to come on and I anticipate them beginning to make an appearance in Shares next week. I feel like the Scallions/Green Onions are going to need at least another week to size up but the all the different onion family crops are looking good! First onion family crop to appear in the Shares will be the Scallions. Then the Yellow Sweet Onions, Red Onions, White Onions, Yellow Storage Onions, Shallots and Leeks (in this order).
The transition time is going to be felt a lot more this season because of our extremely wet spring. Crops were planted later in the fields than originally planned and as well as the direct seeded crops (which some had to be reseeded multiple times because of washouts)! But I am happy to report I'm already seeing Squash Blooms and anticipating the first summer squash (patty pan type) will start arriving in shares in 3 weeks or so!
Hopefully everyone has been handling this heat wave as best they can. I've had all the heat illnesses in the past and they are no fun! Because of this I've developed a rule for the Farm that once the heat index hits 100 degrees I send the Farm Crew home! We also have been taking plenty of water/shade breaks to keep us all healthy and able to keep producing food for everyone! Hard to believe I was complaining about all the rains just a couple/few short weeks ago as now we are running the irrigation daily to make sure all the crops are able to thrive!
Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable July 4th! Remember that if you are going away for the holiday and not able to pick up your share you have until July 3rd at 8am to place a hold on your share if you haven't done so already.
Have a great week,
Farmer Ben and the Crew
