Farm Happenings for September 25, 2019

Posted on September 22nd, 2019 by Ben Saunders

Hopefully after today (Sunday 9/22) we'll get a bit of respite from both the rain and the humidity!  I can't remember any September in past seasons when we've had a heat index top 100 degrees but it happened this year!  The heat and rain have been great for the crops but makes it awful hard on us to get any work done.  The crew has been great with working in the rain and heat but I have a couple of rules: 1) Once the heat index hits 100 nobody works in the fields as heat illnesses are no joke (I've had them all and they're not pleasant) and 2) Nobody works when it's thundering and lightening out, as I've also been struck by lightening and it is a "shocking" experience to say the least ; )!

It's hard to believe that after this week there are only 3 more weeks of the Regular Season Shares!  Like I've mentioned in past emails we got things planted later than planned this Spring and the Summer Crops are still bountiful (because of the warm temps) when normally they would be slowing down by now.  It does seem like there are only 3 weeks left of the Regular though because it seems like the Winter Squash plantings are starting to mature (on schedule) and we most likely will begin the big harvests of them end of this week/beginning of next week!

Every season is challenging and this season is no exception!  We are happy to finally begin harvesting a beet crop for you all!  We were continually seeding them all season since every time we got them seeded, a big rain would wash out the planting.  Well this planting has made it to maturity and they will start being available this week.  Depending on how you ranked your preferences on veggies when signing up, you may see them this week or in future weeks included in your share.  Speaking of ranking preferences of veggies, we haven't been handing out many super hot peppers because folks are responding requesting them.  Perhaps next season I will make 2 different hot pepper preferences (mild hot/Super hot) but in the meantime please send me an email if you would like hot peppers hotter than jalapenos, Serrano and anchos.

Until Next Week,

Farmer Ben and the Crew
