Most of our guys are gone from the farm this week so we invited a pair of sites from church to stay and work for a few days and the sister of one of our farm boys will be here all week.
Nature invented an exciting introduction to farm work for them on Sunday evening. Because of the thunderstorms rolling in this week we decided to do an evening harvest in order to get the last of the onions out of the field before they got soaked. They will store much better if they don’t absorb water at harvest time.
The wagon was full of onions as the lightning flickered overhead and they drove over to the shed to get them under cover.
As the wind began to gust, two girls ran to help Farmer Reuben pull a huge, heavy sheet of plastic over the onions. He was hacking at the end of the plastic with his knife to cut it as the deluge blinded his view.
A few minutes later they were in the house, soaked to the bone, but the job was done.
What a dramatic end to the onion harvest!
