Are you ready to try some Toma Verde tomatillos?
New vegetables are part of the adventure of a Farm Share CSA. Now that you have plenty of experience using your box of veggies, it is time to give yourself another challenge.
I challenge you to put some tomatillos in your share this week and experiment with some new recipes.
Tomatillos are a familiar vegetable in Mexican cooking: salsa verde and enchilada sauce. I love roasted tomatillo salsa.
In fact, you should also try some Poblano peppers, while you are cooking Mexican food. These are great for Chiles Rellenos.
What exactly are they?
Toma Verde is a Tomatillo: it tastes like a cross between a Lemon, a Pineapple and a Tomato. Underneath its papery husk, Toma Verde is deep, bright green. As it ripens, its verdant green color pales to a less intense, slightly soft green color with an almost golden blush. Try Toma Verde in Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Verde (it freezes well for use all winter in fajitas and quesadillas du jour). You can also grill them quartered and brushed with extra virgin olive oil on skewers as a side with grilled steak or chicken. (Remove the husk only when you're ready to use the fruit. Don’t be surprised to find that once the husks are removed, the skin may be sticky and need to be rinsed in cold water.)

What did you miss 3 weeks ago?
PIZZA NIGHT!
The lively conversations mingled with the enticing smells of the wood smoke, roasting tomatoes and melted cheese on the July 25th Pizza Night three weeks ago.
Farm Share CSA members and farm friends made reservations to enjoy the evening overlooking the old willows and the animal pastures while enjoying sourdough, wood fired, wheat crusts topped with the first of the tomatoes and fresh onions, peppers, zuchini, greens and Flint Hill's amazing mozzerella cheese.
This is a great opportunity to come out to see the farm, meet and chat with the farmer!
