You Can’t Even Imagine How Much

Posted on August 6th, 2018 by Reuben DeMaster

You can’t even imagine how many vegetables we are picking, sorting and packing at this time of year; thousands and thousands of zucchini, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, watermelons, cantaloupe, peppers and eggplant.

In recent weeks we’ve sent you farm fresh vegetables and melons that are best when they are picked at the peak of ripeness: sweet corn, watermelon, cantaloupe especially.  These are “once and done” crops meaning that when they are ripe we pick the whole field bed.

Farmer Reuben has years of harvesting experience and knows the signs that indicate when each crop is perfectly ready.  However, it should be obvious that we can’t sample each watermelon or each cob of corn to double check. On occasion, you may get something that missed that ideal of 100% flavor. If you find that you are the “lucky” recipient of something that isn’t quite right, feel free to let us know.  We will do our best to replace or substitute an item for your next delivery.

We are serving about 250 families who are getting 6 - 10 items  from us every week. (More if you think of each cob, bean, cucumber, onion etc.) 99% of what goes out to you is amazing and we are so glad you are enjoying it.

LEEKS

Store leeks in the crisper drawer of the fridge. To easily clean leeks, slice into 1/2 inch pieces and place in a bowl of water. Swish the leeks in the water. The dirt and silt will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the leeks will float to the top.  You may also freeze raw slices of leeks for use in winter soups and stews.

TO USE: sautee with other vegetables, stir fry, add to omelets or make a wonderful soup like Cream of Leek Soup
