Happy 4th of July!
The dog days are here. We are sweating and wiping our brows as we harvest and work in the fields. Our harvests are slowly shifting over to reflect the warmer days. In the spring, the leafy greens grow really well due to the cooler temperatures, rain, and lower pest pressure. The heat brings the spread of the bugs looking for food and many times, the heat scares away the rain. We spent a couple days last week pounding stakes and spreading mulch into a new tomato planting. Just this morning we planted our second round of cucumbers in one of our greenhouses. You may be interested in knowing that we cover our cucumber greenhouses in mesh as a pest exclusion practice. The mesh lets the air flow and the sunshine in but keeps the bugs which can take down a planting of cucumbers in not time outside the growhouse. This helps our cucumbers last much longer than if we were to grow them outside without protection.
Soon, we should be seeing peppers and eggplant. We will be harvesting and drying our onions and garlic next week. This is always a very hot harvest but we are always excited to see them available.
We hope you enjoy your holiday and we will see you next week!
