Here's Meredith in front of our double planting of lettuce starts. This year we are going to try an extra bed in our weekly planting of lettuce to see if we can have enough salad during the hot days of August. We plant 1500 sq ft of lettuce every week in order to fill salad demand, but in the middle of the hottest part of the summer we still often run short. Each week we seed 3600 lettuces, which then take a month to mature in flats before planting. Each week we plant 3600 month-old lettuces, which then take a month to get big enough to harvest. Salad is a big crop for us, and a lot of work goes into it.
We are saying goodbye to our carrots, as they were getting hairy. It's always a judgment call at the end of the season as to whether or not we should let the carrots go or keep eating them. If anyone thought they got carrots in their box that weren't up to our standards, please let us know and we'll make it up to you. We value quality, and we always want to hear if there are problems or issues.
June is an important planting month for us. We are in the middle of fully planting or prepping beds for the entire farm. Today we are going to till and bed shape the 16 beds of carrots that will get seeded 2nd week of July. We try to get beds prepped so that we can germinate weeds ahead planting in order to eliminate them before carrots need to germinate. This is called stale bed seed preparation and it's a great weed control technique if you are able to get the bed tops prepped in time.
