Above is a picture of our silky greenhouse chard. Greens grown in a greenhouse get very little wind compared to outside, which means their leaves have no reason to toughen up. The greenhouse chard and kale tend to be thinner leaved and more delicate. And, once they have had some frosts on them, sweeter. In cold temperatures some plants produce a natural anti-freeze: SUGAR, which is why carrots, kale, spinach all tend to be sweeter in the fall.
We are heading into the Persephone period, in which daylength stays at our below 10 hours. We have been working to get all our greenhouses seeded to take advantage of the last remaining warm days.
There are only two more weeks of Veggies for the 2020 summer season. Hard to believe. We apologize for the end of season flurry of emails. Important things get decided right now, and it’s the only way we have to communicate with the group. We want to be sure we catch everyone and don’t have any surprises, so look for another email about Auto-Renew this weekend.
We pulled carrots Thursday and Friday. It was a tough time of year when the carrots were seeded, so when I could see that I didn’t get the germination I usually do, I should have reseeded. But I didn’t. Hence we have nice-sized carrots, but about 60% of the quantity as last year. So, enjoy the carrots while you can, because they won’t be around in the first part of the summer of 2021. We will be cleaning and washing next week, so expect them in your last shares of the season.
Last but not least, please feel free to email us your thoughts about the 2020 CSA season. We want to know what your experience was, including any hang ups you had with the process or quality. We know many of you wanted to see the farm, which did not seem like a good idea for obvious reasons. Next year we are planning a farm tour with Covid precautions for all who haven’t visited yet. We will wait until we have a good amount of UV light.
Thanks for reading the whole post! Have a great week.
