Progress was made this week on our pavilion/farm store. With the help of an Amish crew of 3, we were able to raise the trusses and get the roof on. Many hands made light work, so the process went quickly and smoothly. We really like working with the Amish when we can, and we always get a kick out of some of their requests. Floyd, the crew leader, asked if we could get them some ice cream. He said it was for the kids, but we know better! At the end of the day, I was happy to sweeten the deal with some ice cream sandwiches.
Now that we have a roof, the next big step is to start framing out the enclosed portion, which will occupy a little over half of the covered space. A walk in cooler, rolling counter space, a freezer and a couple of shelves will occupy the inside of the farm store, with ample room for veggies, meat, honey and eggs. I'm so excited to staff the pick up in this sassy new space! No doubt it will be much more cozy come winter. If only we could devote as much attention to this project as Floyd and his crew did...we would be finished in no time! But alas, patience is required. We hope to have the enclosure complete before the snow flies.
Speaking of the cold, changes in the weather are upon us. The cold nights mean that the heat loving crops won't be around for much longer. We will soon turn our attention to winter squash, which are are on their way out off the field and will appear in your boxes after a couple weeks of curing (to maximize sweetness). Rainbow carrots are almost big enough to dig as well! We will keep you posted!... And if you are wondering, we have 5 weeks of CSA deliveries left, including this week. Our final deliveries go out the week of October 28 and 29.
Happy fall!
