We think nature's plan for native prairies is pretty inspiring, and it's been a goal of ours to bring on as much of it as we can at the farm. Thanks to a grant opportunity with the Xerxes Society, we were able to establish a small chunk of prairie on the slope just south of the pavilion, complete with a mixture of some 25 species of native grasses, sedges and wild flowers. Over the course of the last year, the plants have exploded in size and are currently filling in the space beautifully. This little patch of prairie provides habitat to a myriad of insects, including butterflies, dragonflies, moths, lacewings, parasitic wasps and more. In and around this space, there is a hum of activity constantly buzzing with purpose and vitality. The pollinators seem happy with their all-you-can-eat buffet of forbs, as they often can be seen flitting from one showy blossom to the next.
In many ways, we humans dig into our food with the same gusto when we know it's fresh, flavorful and organic. We are taking cue from our pollinator friends and taking in what nature provides with a purpose. Now's the time when we can make meals without needing many (if any) additional fresh ingredients. Stir fries, curries, chop salads, ratatouilles, and even wraps can be made with any number of ingredient combos. It's a great opportunity for trying new things! Please dig in this week and eat your pollinator-friendly veggies with gusto. Cheers!
