Farm Happenings for June 16, 2020

Posted on June 12th, 2020 by Will Nelson

This week in the farm was a hot one! We are starting to transition out of the greenhouses and are doing a lot more harvesting in the fields. We harvested our first round of garlic scapes this week! I always enjoy garlic scape harvest; the smell of fresh garlic is always pleasant. We also had our largest harvest of strawberries and they are still coming in strong!

In the fields, we did a lot of weeding, as usual, and worked on some more specialized tasks. We trellised our first round of tomatoes and went on thistle patrol. Tomatoes are one of my favorite plants, so I am always excited to work with them. Pounding the posts to trellis with was hard work, especially on the hot days, but also very satisfying. Thistle is a spiky weed that can become quite pervasive on the farm. We are trying to get rid of it before it goes to seed. This involves weed wacking down thistle patches that we find in and along pathways.

Overall, it has been a good week filled with great conversations in the field and lots of water breaks to beat the heat!

Important Message for Tuesday Members

Project SHARE will be running their monthly community food distribution next Tuesday, June 16th from noon to 2pm. In order to minimize car traffic (and frustration) navigating the Facilities Management/CPYB/SHARE parking lot we will push the start time of the CSA to 2pm for next week's curbside pick up.

SHARE will place "Do Not Enter" signs in the parking lot once their food distribution ends but CSA members should feel free to proceed past these signs in order to navigate the way to our curbside pick up. The pick up will be located in the same place as always, behind the Facilities Management building.
