FIELD NOTES by Vanessa Ryan
The farm is thanking the powers that be for the much-needed rain this week! Our irrigation team was overjoyed for a short break in their duties. We have been taking advantage of the barn to shelter us from the heat and rainstorms, and we are chipping away at bunching and hanging our garlic to cure. The livestock team rounded up all the sheep from the solar fields on campus and brought them back to the farm on Wednesday. The lambs grew so much in just a few short weeks! The crew is happy to hear their baaing from the vegetable fields again.
We were also excited to harvest tomatoes for the first time this week. The crew worked together to finish trellising the tomatoes before Wednesday’s rain which was a fun challenge. We have also been bulk harvesting some crops such as lettuce and beets to prevent them from going to seed. Jenn Wolf gave us a lesson on canning this week, and the crew got to make their own dill pickles!
