I’m writing to y’all on one of the first cold mornings in the yurt this season. It has been so awesome to experience the changing of seasons through the lens of the visceral experience that is living in a yurt (e.g. now sleeping with my head under the blankets until I decide it's time to use the wood-fired yurt heater), as well as through hellos and hard goodbyes to vegetables that have become loving regulars in the summer farm landscape—you will be missed, cucurbits, melons, corn, and other summer friends.
I’m forever nostalgic, but saying goodbye to summer on the farm is a kind of hard reality that can only be comforted by the full-circle return of familiar, colder weather crops that I started out with this spring like bok choy, Chinese cabbage, and collards, as well as the newness of our no-till winter squash and hearty sweet potatoes. I’ve also been grateful to the CSA volunteers and student farmers who are introducing new perspectives to keep me fresh and energized. With 2 more months left of the apprenticeship, I know there’s so much this fall to cherish!
