Farm Happenings for September 29, 2020

Posted on September 25th, 2020 by Will Nelson
As the saying goes, "Many hands make light work". We are indebted to CSA members who come to the farm regularly to roll up their sleeves and dig in with us on the task at hand. Whether helping with harvest, field work, processing garlic, or digging to unheard of depths to extract this year's sweet potatoes the Dickinson College Farm has benefited greatly from our volunteers' willingness to share their time and working hands - Thank you!

Now that it is officially autumn and we have experienced an early nip of frost, it is time to focus on harvesting our roots crops. First on the list were our sweet potatoes. Over the course of three days, staff and volunteers dug 8500 lbs of tubers - no small feat! Next on the list was carrots, followed by napa cabbage and kohlrabi. Luckily, these crops are great for long term storage and are now tucked away in our coolers. Still to bulk harvest are turnips, celeriac, daikon radishes, and even more carrots. 'Tis the season of the tuber and we look forward to sharing the bounty with you!

Wishing you all the best,
jenn
