The thick fog that rested over the fields as we began our harvest on Monday was a sign that another humid week was to come. The crew, the plants, and the livestock continue to be challenged by the relentless heat and humidity of July. However, July also brings many more crops that are ready to harvest, like squash, cucumbers, and corn. As always, there are endless weeds to pick, and the crew continued to prepare garlic we harvested last week, hanging it to dry on newly-built racks. On Wednesday, we watched as dark clouds dumped rain on Carlisle. Those at the farm benefited from the clouds and a cool breeze, while our market team got soaked! As I look ahead to my remaining weeks at the farm, I’m filled with excitement at the thought of harvesting some of my favorite crops, like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and melons. But it also feels bittersweet to think about the end of farming and long summer days. Fortunately, we’re only halfway through July, so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the simple pleasures of summer, like the first ripe tomato or the one-hundredth zucchini!
Have a good week!
