Notes from the Farm Fields This Week!

Posted on July 23rd, 2021 by Mary Silva

Howdy from the Dickinson College Farm!

Unlike the last hot and humid weeks on the farm, our crew got to enjoy very mild and breezy weather working out in the fields this week. Our farm team was slightly smaller this week as many of our farmers were on vacation. Nevertheless, we all rose to the occasion and accomplished a lot.

We had an exciting start to our week on Monday harvesting new crops like peppers and okra in the morning. That afternoon we had an eye-opening educational lesson about weeds around the farm! During the lesson we our teacher, Dawn, led us around the farm teaching us all about the medicinal and alimentary properties of plants like purslane and wood sorrel which are considered weeds in the fields. This educational lesson has been extremely useful and provided us with endless snacks during our many hours of weeding this week.

Aside from weeding to maintain our fields, the crew worked on an exciting seed saving project in our greenhouses. We took the time to harvest dried out pea pods, cilantro seed pods, and dill flowers which we will eventually process and use in seasons to come.

While it was a super productive week at the farm, we are ending on a bittersweet note. Thursday we celebrated the past three and a half seasons of the extremely hard work, dedication, and innovation of our packing house coordinator Jenn Wolf. She is moving on to tackle exciting opportunities in the world of technology. Her incomparable cooking skills, extreme efficiency, and impeccable sense of humor will be greatly missed in the lower barn and by all at the farm. We will miss Jenn Wolf, queen of the lower barn!
