Field Notes

September is always one of the busiest months at the farm, and this week was no exception.  Although bidding goodbye to our full-time summer student crew is truly bittersweet, the influx of students to campus happily beckons part-time student farmers, both new hires and old favorites, to the farm.  On Tuesday, the entire student farmer crew was able to meet, and students have started to steadily come to the farm throughout the week.  The apprentices and management at the farm are ecstatic about the crew we have for the remainder of the season.  We’re also looking forward to the amazing events and programs in store for the semester and can’t wait to share the farm with the community in various ways.

On the vegetable front – holy tomatoes.  The crew has worked diligently to pick and sort tomatoes from our abundantly laden plants.  And, hearkening back to the early summer, they also planted a field with new strawberry plants to ensure more delicious berries in the future.

On the livestock front (my personal specialty), the rainfall and cooler weather have been appreciated by the sheep, cattle, and chickens.  The rain creates vibrantly lush pasture, and the cooler weather allows everyone to comfortably leave the shade and enjoy the grass, even during the afternoon hours.  Fall is certainly on its way!
