Finally, it's been feeling like fall this week. The weather has been significantly cooler, and crops are being cycled out of production by our diligent farm crew. After such a mild October, we're all keeping an eye out for the first potential upcoming frost. While vegetable fields are continually becoming emptier as we hasten towards the winter, our pasture continues to grow and provide delicious forage for our animals. The pasture, too, will eventually meet the same dormant fate as our vegetable fields -- but for now, the animals are savoring the fresh grass without the annoyance of flies! This week, the cattle were treated with a former strawberry field planted with cover crop, and we experimentally mob-grazed (high animal density for a brief period of time) the field in hopes to support the developing pasture. The cattle were excited for the tryout!
