For the past two weeks I’ve been doing a community food/home-gardening research internship and it’s been an awesome experience! I like to start the morning by reviewing my responsibilities for the day and then getting to work in the gardens. One of my responsibilities includes maintaining the campus’ gardens (located by Montgomery and The Handlebar) and my personal garden behind Kaufman. I often use the excess herbs as treats for my pet bunny or I save them for DIY herbal remedies. I plan on hosting a workshop in two weeks at the Handlebar to share more about herbal remedies using what’s available in the garden, so if you’re interested be on the lookout :-)
One of the highlights of my week are visits to home-gardeners in the area. I stop by once a week to offer extra hands to help out with anything they need to improve their gardens. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to become better connected to the Carlisle community. My mind (and stomach, ευχαριστώ for the stuffed squash blossoms Kaliopi!) has already been nourished by this experience so far. Working on the farm for a few weeks prior to starting this internship has helped expand my time management skills and overall endurance capacity. I am proud to say that after some good ol’ hand weeding and bed prepping I’ve begun planting in my personal garden today! Here’s a photo of me planting some tomatoes in one bed with some green onions, hot peppers and salad mix in another:
Thanks for reading, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and a Happy 4th of July!
Sincerely,
Genesis
