Well, it has been a very hot and humid week for us at the farm and likely for you, too! The crops are hot, our animals are hot, and our crew is hot, too!! Midday popsicles and snacks made by fellow staff have helped keep morale and energy levels going. The dry conditions have demanded a lot of time and energy from our irrigation team members, Hansi and Matt who have been watering crops almost non-stop. Their efforts, along with daily care and attention from our student farmers and apprentices help expand our weekly veggie options for the CSA. Crops to look forward to in the near future include bell peppers, eggplant, cherry tomatoes, and sweet corn! Since we are in peak cucumber season, Cheri has been busy making dill and sweet pickles in our packing house - plus pickled beets!!
New to the farm this week is Anthony Becker, our new Kitchen Manager for Farm Works, the College Farm's retail shop located just beside Denny Hall on High Street. The College Farm got the green light to officially launch Farm Works with the start of the semester. Our seven-week trial in the spring proved successful and we look forward to serving fresh soups, salads, and baked items during lunchtime hours Monday through Friday plus lots of preserved farm goodies, fresh vegetables, and frozen meat!!
