Hello CSA members,
It has been another busy and productive week here on the farm. Students and apprentices braved the haze and planted our crop of sweet potatoes and winter squash. We also pulled a ton of weeds this week. As they have been for weeks now, the irrigation crew has been working nonstop to keep our crops happy. I took the attached picture at about 0600 on Thursday morning. The haze made for a very strange farm morning atmosphere.
For this weeks vegetable highlight, I'd like to draw attention to my favorite crunchy salad additives: the Japanese white turnips. The turnips we grow in the spring are a Japanese variety of white turnip. They are sweet and delicious diced or shredded on the salads.
I'd also like to note the ephemeral garlic scapes. The "scape" is the flowering head of the plant. By picking it off early we force the plant to dedicate more energy to the bulb. We pick them early so they are still tender. Every year I mince a few bunches into some olive oil to keep in the freezer. It makes for a quick and easy garlic flavor to any dish! Get some this week before they get too big!
FYI, we are glad to reuse your strawberry pints. Please feel free to bring them back to your CSA pick up location.
Finally, we would love if you could share your culinary adventures with us. We want to know how you are using your vegetables. Please tag us on instagram @dickinson_farm
