Happy Monday CSA friends!
We finally got some rain! The farm has been bone dry and our irrigation team has been run ragged. While we didn't get enough to really do too much for our cash crops, it did give a few days break. Also, the rain was perfect for germinating the cover crop seed we planted last week. Cover crop is one of our most important tools in cultivating vibrant soils (and vibrant soils make the best vegetables). Each fall, as we terminate our cash crops we "flip" the fields by tilling in the residue and seeding crops that will grow through the fall and protect/build the soil for next year.
Please note: the "green beans" available are actually a mix of purple, yellow, and green string beans. They all cook the same and taste great!
Pictured: a nice view from atop the tractor overlooking our compost piles. They compost piles are our other most important tool for building vibrant soils! They are mostly made from vegetable waste from the Dining Hall and leaves collected by the township.
Enjoy your produce!
Best,
Alex
