It's dry, dry, dry! We doing a daily rain dance, crossing our fingers for even a small shower or two. We're fortunate to have a good well and have been able to irrigate regularly, but we may have to supplement from our neighbor's pond soon. The dry weather means we've been working on a few big projects, like putting up tunnels in the field for winter crops.
There are LOTS of greens this week, so get ready for some yummy salads! Arugula, lettuce mix and greens mix will be available for swapping. For cooking greens, you'll find boc choy, chard, napa cabbage and collards on the list!
A couple of Harvie-housekeeping items: A reminder to update your preferences throughout the season. We are occasionally adding crops to our product list as they become available. A good example of one for this week is COLLARDS (oh, and they are delicious!). Collards were recently added to the list, so many folks have not yet rated them. They may not appear in your share at first, but if you're a fan of collard greens, you will be able to swap them in!
If you're new to collards, head over to Saveur's site for recipes using the greens raw with sweet potatoes or sauteed with caramelized onions...Collard Greens Recipes
Also, a word about SWAPPING. Each item in your share is given a dollar value, and the number of items in your share depends on what share size you have and the value of each item. As you swap items, you may be swapping an item OUT of your share that has a lower value than another item that you are swapping INTO your share. For example, cucumbers are valued at $2 per unit (1 lb) while sweet potatoes are valued at $6 per unit (2 lbs). So, if you swap your cucumbers for sweet potatoes, you will add $4 to your share, unless other swaps are made that balance this "overage" out. Harvie will always "round down" what you are charged if it is less than $1. Also, if for example your small share was valued at $20 and you made this swap, Harvie will charge you $3, essentially capping your share total at $21 before charging you any overage amount.
You can usually see the prices of all items on the extras list, which will help you determine which swaps you would like to make. Harvie is currently working on a way to make swapping more transparent, particularly with item values. We will keep you updated!
If you have any questions about swapping, please email Brittany at brittany@flyingplowfarm.com.
