WHAT'S GROWING ON

We will be working through some patches of our fresh fall greens like bok choy and arugula and turnips. The summer squash are doing really well, the cucumbers have slowed down very quickly. Might be too chilly for those plants. It’s time for those butternut squash! First picking this week I think. We are hoping sweet potatoes are putting on some bulk this week with extra watering. They are not ready for you yet, I can hardly wait for you to taste our heirloom sweet potatoes.

Did you know many of our crops are heirloom specialty varieties? Our sweet potatoes, Kennebec white potatoes, some of our peppers, patty pan and lebanese squashes, our watermelons and many others are all specialty heirlooms. Tastier than your average vegetable!

VISIT THE GREAT FREDERICK FAIR

The Great Frederick Fair is this week through Saturday night. Visit the Farm and Garden Building and see if you can find some of our entries. We won some pretty ribbons, including a blue ribbon for our onions and Best of Show for our garlic. Enjoy!

THE KIWI FRUIT ARE RIPENING!

The kiwi on the arbor that shades the front of the Veggie Shed is ripening! It is a Northern Hardy Kiwi arbor, full of ripening kiwi berries. You are invited to search for squishy ones that will be sweet and impressively similar to the tropical fruit. You may take a few home to ripen on your counter. Learn more here: https://blog.houseinthewoods.com/2020/07/02/grow-a-kiwi-arbor-for-shade-and-fruit/

After you read that blog post...update! The added kiwis were actually mislabeled, they were males! No fruit there. Such drama in the kiwi club.

DIGGING THE SWEETS

We have been watering the sweet potatoes more in hopes that they will grow faster. We are monitoring their progress. Watch my notices for news of a sweet potato dig. We will try to invite you to help with the treasure hunt. We balance the timing of their readiness and the dampness of the soil for digging. Then they need to be cured before they are sweet and ready for you.

RENEWALS COMING UP

We begin preparing for next season during October! If you want IN on CSA 2025, make sure your Auto-renew is set to ON. You can reply back to me for help setting Auto-renew on or off, or you can do this yourself in your Harvie profile.
